The heart of the Athletic Matrix Training System is firmly rooted in the ability of an athlete to efficiently absorb and display force. While firmly rooted by the latest scientific research, the Athletic Matrix Training System is heavily influenced by training which produces displays of incredible athleticism: ballet, martial arts, and gymnastics. By combining the latest research, the most elite training progressions, and allowing the dynamic influence of the arts, a truly unique training experience is created.
The Athletic Matrix Training System begins with the simplest movement patterns under conditions of little force and speed, and progresses to complex, almost chaotic movements utilizing extreme speed. Since each athlete is required to refine the basic skills, agility is maintained even as the athlete moves explosively.
Speed, Agility, and Quickness Training is obviously the biggest focus of the Athletic Matrix Training System. The latest training methods and drills are used to engrain proper running mechanics. While perfect form is desired, without the underlying physical characteristics needed for speed, very little progress will be made. That is why the Athletic Matrix Training System provides a comprehensive training experience; to develop all qualities that contribute to athleticism.
Strength Training is utilized in the Athletic Matrix Training System to enhance relative strength. The strength work is sport specific, meaning that movements are worked, not isolated muscles. Sport specific also means that unless your sport requires additional muscle mass, then the training will be to add strength relative to your bodyweight. Soccer, volleyball, and track athletes are prime examples where relative strength, not muscle mass is very important. For these sports, pure strength work and muscular endurance are trained. Only sports where muscular size is required will use repetition protocols of moderate volume with moderate weight. These protocols are what currently are most prescribed by personal trainers, and are the left-over influence of bodybuilding on sports training. These cookie-cutter programs have no place in performance training.
Strength training within the Athletic Matrix Training System is progressive, and functional. While many exercises utilize two legs, the ultimate goal is to maximize single leg strength. This is because most athletic movements are single leg. Single leg movements require a very specific form of core stabilization and coordination. This is why so much emphasis must be placed on this type of training.
Reactive Training is what truly separates the Athletic Matrix Training System from most other training systems. Our proprietary force absorption training allows athletes who formerly were not “springy” to develop this underlying physical asset. The process is not overnight, but reactive qualities can be developed. Most programs use some skips and hops, calling them plyometrics, but fail to utilize the best methods for developing “spring”. This is why so many athletes fail to find the pot of gold in the squat rack….it isn’t there.
Injury Prevention is possibly the best feature of the Athletic Matrix Training System, although it isn’t glamorous. There are an estimated 100,000 ACL injuries per year in the United States, and almost all are caused by the inability of the athlete to absorb the force demands placed upon them during athletics. ACL injuries can only be minimized through:
- Teaching proper movement patterns.
- Maximizing single leg strength.
- Consistently engaging in a progressive plyometrics program.
- Utilizing a conditioning program which features change of direction.
These aspects of the Athletic Matrix Training System are merely the beginning, but give a glimpse into the depth and breadth of knowledge that must be called upon to create a holistic approach to increasing athleticism. Science, art, and thousands of hours of in the trenches experience are what each Athletic Matrix training session will utilize to provide the Ultimate Training Experience.
